Protecting Children Online

It's an unfortunate fact of reality, but children are the most  mistreated computer users on the Internet today. The good news is that there are some practical steps you can take to protect your children from sexual predators, hackers, and other seedy individuals who want to cause harm. This article will describe a few of them.

The first step in protecting your children at the computer is to prevent their access to passwords. This will keep them from sharing passwords with others and inadvertently enabling hacking into your system. If you think about it, there’s no reason why a five, seven, or even twelve year old needs to know the passwords to sensitive areas on the computer unless you’ve given them permission! In fact, children don’t need to know the password used to access the Internet either. It may be a hassle to type it in each time they want to get online, but it’s better to know the times that they connect than to have them sneak online without your authorization and knowledge of their activities.

The second step towards protecting your children online is using the computer together. Siting next to your child while he or she peruses the Internet, you can guide him or her to make safe and intelligent decisions. You can approve websites and bookmark them together. You can monitor the conversations your children have with their friends and teach them appropriate online behavior at the same time. You can make recommendations and create a private time for quality time as well.

The third step involves blocking access to inappropriate areas altogether. You and your children may not always agree about what’s appropriate, but as a guardian, you’re in control and you’re ultimately responsible for their safety. Take the time to look into software tools that put you in control and allow you to block access to certain websites. If you use an online service like AOL (America Online), you can use its internal Parental Control settings to block access to various chatrooms and websites. You could even block instant messaging and email from anyone who isn’t a fellow AOL user.

Other tools available online operate similar to the way that AOL’s Parental Control settings work, however no collection of tools could replace the reinforcement of mom and dad. Never let your children speak with strangers and never leave them alone at the computer unattended. Children just don’t have the experience that adults have and they don’t have the skills required to handle inappropriate conversations, emails, or images found online.

NOTE: Some of these tools include kid-specific web browsers that will visit pre-approved websites. Others include browser plug-ins that won’t allow access to online areas that contain forbidden keywords.

Another step requires teaching your children to never ever volunteer personal information. Under no circumstances, should children give their personal names, home addresses, phone numbers, or school information to anyone over the Internet regardless of the situation.  In the even this information is required to enter a contest of some sort, be sure that you’re the one who makes the decision to supply it and that you’re the one who does it.

Performing all of these steps won’t be easy. However you can help minimize resistance to your monitoring efforts by explaining why you’re taking these precautions. Smaller children will probably enjoy the time you spend together at the computer, but older children and pre-teens may resent it. To help build a case for your concern, you might want to show your older children a few news stories that exemplify the dangers that unsupervised children are exposed to. The newspaper is unfortunately full of examples but with your help, we can shrink them world-wide.

Search Engines

Search engines have the main purpose to index thousands of millions of web pages. Once you look for a word or a phrase, the search engine scans automatically the entire database where it has the stored pages indexed and it returns to you as a result a list containing the most relevant results for that search.

The only criteria the number of pages found and their relevance depend on are the capabilities of the used search engine.

Search engines appeared somewhere in the early 90’s when Alan Emtage, a student at the McGill University in Montreal created the first search engine like too. It was called Archie. Its purpose was to search through the information available on the FTP servers. The files on these servers were accessible for anyone, but one couldn't use them unless knowing the exact address of the server and of the file. Archie looked through this database and gathered lists of files for each server. It was used by people to match phrases and characters in order to take them to the server address the file they were looking for was on.

Archie is now an old technique, but its creation was the first step in the search engine rally that is going on now. As the public grew more and more aware of the existence of the internet, the need for a search tool became visible.

So, first there were some software robots, using the concept of spidering to index the web, following links from one site to the other and saving the text from all visited websites in a database.

Between 1994 and 1995 three important search engines appeared: Lycos, WebCrawler and AltaVista. At about the same time Yahoo! appeared but Yahoo! is not a search engine. Yes, it has a search engine function, but yahoo is firstly a director or data and articles, providing different services as email and hosting. Recently yahoo has signed contracts with other search engines as Google for both of them to provide more search results.

Today search engines are in a continuous competition. There are thousands of search engines, but just a few big ones. This small group of top search engines is responsible for more than 90% of on line searches.

But the question arises: if search engines are free and they cam be used by everyone what keeps them financially alive?  The answer to the question is very simple: advertising and traffic. The more visits they have, the bigger the traffic then the more money they can make providing advertising space.

Search engines are competing to develop the best formulas and algorithms to evaluate the web pages accordingly to the keywords provided.
If someone is looking for a top position in search engines, then he has to be sure that his site is projected in such a way that search engines would find it easily, being relevant for the keywords and phrases the owner wants it to be found by

Device Drivers:

A device driver or a software driver is a specific type of computer software typically developed to allow communication with hardware devices such as a mouse or a printer.  This software causes an interface for communicating with the device through the specific computer “bus” or communication subsystem that the hardware is connected to.  The software provides commands to and receives data from the device and, on the other end, the requisite interfaces to the operating system and software applications.

In plain English, a device driver is a program that allows various hardware to work on your system.  The driver will allow your hardware to communicate with your operating system making the devices operable in the proper way.  The user installs the driver and then the program allows the hardware to operate transparently without user input.

Computers and their operating systems cannot be expected to know how to control every device both now and in the future.  To solve this problem, operating systems basically dictate how every type of device should be controlled.  The device driver then translates these operating system mandated function cells into device specific calls.  In theory, a new device which is controlled in a new manner should function properly is a suitable driver is available.  This new driver will insure that the device appears to operate as usual from the operating system's point of view.

Depending on the specific computer architecture, drivers can be 8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit and more.  This corresponds directly to the way the operating system is set up for which those drivers were developed.  For example, in 16-bit Windows 3.11, most drivers were 16-bits which most drivers for 32-bit Windows XP are 32-bit.

New computers will often have device drivers already loaded into the system to make it easier for the user to just open the box and use their new system.  But if you should happen to buy a separate component for your system such as a joystick or printer, you will most likely need to install a device driver.  The driver will come with the system, usually on a storage device like a CD-ROM.  They will give you information on how to install the software and it is really quite easy if you follow the directions.

You cannot operate your computer system with separate components like a mouse without a device driver for that mouse.  If you find that any part of your computer is not running properly, you may need to update your device drivers.  Simply go to the website of the manufacturer of your hardware and they will usually have updated drivers available free for download.

History of Operating Systems

The history of computer operating systems is relatively new.  Early versions of computers didn’t run on any kind of operating system which made them complicated to operate for the general user.  The user had sole use of the machine and would arrive armed with programs and data generally on punched paper tape.  The program would be loaded into the machine and the machine would set to work until it was completed or the computer crashed.

Over the years, operating systems have evolved to more user-friendly software programs that make it easier for everyone to use a computer in a more efficient way.  As machines became more powerful, the necessity for some type of program to manage the data and the processes became more and more important.

One of the first operating systems that came about originated at Microsoft with the invention of MS-DOS.  This operating system called for users to enter commands in to make a system perform certain tasks.  While it wasn’t for everyone, it was still a step forward into computer technology.

The next step in the history of operating systems came from Apple Corporation with the advent of Mac OS.  The Macintosh operating system was the basis for a lot of the operating systems we see on computers today.  This operating system was the first to introduce graphical user interfaces (GUI) that made navigating the personal computer much easier for any user.

Using Mac OS as a model, Microsoft began re-vamping their own operating system eventually releasing the first version of Microsoft Windows which also used graphical user interfaces (GUI) technology to make it easier to use a computer.  As user requirements became more demanding, Microsoft developed more and more operating system versions to make the computer more efficient.

While Mac OS was the basis for Windows, the latter has certainly taken over the market in popularity.  The history of Windows as an operating system is certainly much more involved than Mac.  The many versions of Windows – each improving on the other – has made computer technology evolve into a science that is ever-growing and ever-changing.

Even though computer technology is a relatively new phenomenon, the history of operating systems has a long past.  As different versions of the two biggies – Windows and Mac OS – come out, a new page is written in the computer history “books”.  Just as the history of operating systems has evolved over the years, it will continue to evolve.  Programmers will make operating systems better and better and make our computer usage easier and easier.

All About Data Recovery

At some point in time, everyone who owns a computer will experience the trials and tribulations of hard drive failure.  The reasons behind it vary, and could include everything from a human error to damages resulting from flood or water.  Viruses can play a role as well, along with many other factors.  For many years, the need to recover data that has been lost or damaged has made data recovery such a very valuable asset.

Almost all hard drives can be recovered.  Normally, if the drive is making a ticking or a scratching noise, you can use certain software programs to recover the data.  Sometimes, due to age or bad parts, the aperture arm in the hard drive can fail, or the platters can become damaged and lose the data that they hold.  If you can't recover the information with software, you'll need to send the hard drive off and have it either rebuilt or have technicians recover your data.

Data recovery is always a choice, from hard drives that are 2 GB in size to the largest of over 300    GB or more of data.  No matter what size hard drive you have, the data can generally be recovered.  Keep in mind that if you've had a computer crash, you'll need to send the hard drive off to have the data recovered by technicians.

One of the key benefits of data recovery is the fact that information can also be retrieved from the recycle bin as well.  Partition recovery, and even information that has been lost somewhere on the disk can be retrieved as well.  Even though it may seem like your data is gone forever - the technicians that specialize in data recovery can recover it.

From Windows to Mac, everything can be recovered.  There are different filing structures and formats, including NTFS and FAT32.  These are common Windows filing structures, and hold all of the information for your hard.

Those of you, who have multiple hard drives in your computer, can rest assured that RAID configurations can also be recovered.  If a single hard drive on the RAID configuration fails, the RAID setup will absorb the blow and there won't be a loss of data.  On the other hand, if the entire RAID configuration crashes, it will crash big time.  Whenever this happens, you'll need to send it off and have technicians restore both the RAID hardware and software.

Anytime your hard drive happens to crash or malfunction, data recovery is there to help you get back your data.  Whether they are personally files or very important files that are need for business - you can put your trust in data recovery and know that you'll get everything the back the way it was.

What To Look For In A Computer Monitor

A computer monitor is important for any computer because it is what brings the world of computers to people visually. There are all sorts of different things to use for a computer monitor. Among the things to look for in a computer monitor, include the resolution of the monitor, its size, the type of display and the refresh quality of the monitor. The size of the pixels in the monitor should also be considered when you are considering what to look for in a computer monitor.

The first thing to look for in a computer monitor is the resolution quality of the monitor. The resolution is based on the number of pixels that are in the monitor screen. When there are more pixels in the monitor the resolution will be improved. For instance, a monitor with a resolution of 1600x1280 is better than a 1280x1024 monitor. The horizontal number of pixels is listed first followed by the perpendicular number.

The next thing to look for in a computer monitor is the size of the monitor. The size of the monitor will refer to how big the screen is from a diagonal measurement. 16” monitors are popular but there are other sizes existing at typical stores that sell computer monitors. When looking for the monitor that has the right screen size the ability of the user to read what is on the monitor should be greatly considered.

The display type that is used in a monitor is similar to what is used with a television set. Cathode ray tubes (CRT) are used in larger monitors that have picture tubes working to display images. Liquid crystal display monitors are becoming more popular. This uses a liquid film to display images and is incredibly popular because of the thinner size of the monitor.

It should be noted that the display type is going to make an impact on the colors in the monitor. A CRT monitor will be easily visible from multiple angles and will do a better job with displaying images. However, a   LCD (liquid crystal display) monitor will be able to bring out higher quality resolution for images. Technology for this is improving though. In fact, it is easier to place on a typical desk because of the smaller width of the monitor.

The refresh quality of the monitor is another thing to think about when looking for a computer monitor. This refers to the highest number of vertical scans that a monitor can produce. A typical monitor will have a range between 70 and 200 vertical scans per second. When the monitor has a higher number of vertical scans per second that means that monitor will be able to refresh what is on it at a faster rate. There will be less flickering when there are more vertical scans in a second.

While the number of pixels in the monitor is one of the things to think about when you consider what to look for in a computer monitor, the size of those individual pixels should be considered also. Each pixel will have a size in a specific amount of millimeters (mm). The size will determine the dot pitch in the monitor. A typical dot pitch for a quality monitor will be .25. This means that the pixel will be especially small and less than a millimeter (mm) in size. Overall, when the dot pitch is smaller the monitor will be better. This means that greater levels of resolution can be created on smaller monitors.

That is what to look for in a computer monitor. The resolution, size, refresh quality, display and the pixel size should all be considered when looking into buying a computer monitor. Not all computer monitors will be the similar, so it is important to look into all of these aspects so that it will be easier to find a monitor that is right for one’s individual needs.

Computer Viruses

No matter who you talk to, everyone has either had a computer virus or knows of someone who has gone through the agony of trying to get rid of the problem. Computer viruses are a hot topic that seem to affect everyone who owns a computer system, whether at work or at home. The companies that produce software programs that catch and delete these computer viruses are constantly updating their databases for virus types and definitions so that they can better protect your system against all the newest viruses. Creating virus protection programs is a multi-billion dollar business that is growing more and more everyday. The number of viruses being created and uploaded to the Internet is growing at an astounding rate of a new one every eighteen seconds! This definitely keeps the virus protection companies on their toes with research and development.

Because these viruses copy themselves to any computer system they come in contact with, the spread of viruses throughout a computer network or the Internet is a very fast and deadly thing to happen to your computer. Because computer viruses are a hot topic, they routinely are the subject of magazine articles and forum topics online. While some viruses do nothing more than frustrate you with pop-up ads or other messages, others are completely malicious and set out from the start to destroy the files and operating systems of your computer.

Of the 53,000 viruses that have been identified and classed, more than 80 percent of them have been classed as malicious and capable of harming your computer system or data files. These computer viruses behave in much the same way as biological viruses by contaminating any computer systems they come in contact with. These self-executing programs are generally very small and work at damaging the way your computer works or by damaging or completely removing key system files.

When computer viruses are a hot topic, more and more people find out about the destructive power of these programs. In this way a great many people find out about virus protection programs and rush out to get the newest protection programs or they ensure that their computer virus protection is up to date. Many magazine and news articles about computer viruses have the effect of sometimes panicking people into believing that their computers are at risk. Having a good anti-virus program and current updates is one of the best ways to protect your computer system against virus attacks.

This must also be coupled with good file habits such as scanning all downloaded files with the anti-virus program before opening them. It is always a good idea to take the time to ensure that the file you thought you were downloading is indeed the file you have. For instance, a file that labels itself as a movie file and is less than one megabyte in size is not a movie file. Movie files are generally nearly a thousand times that size and therefore, the file you have downloaded is most likely not a movie file and may in fact be a computer virus.

Computer viruses are a hot topic at the office when a virus attack manages to get past protection protocols put in place by the network administrators. All it takes is one person allowing some executable files they have been sent to open and start replicating itself through the network of computers to make life Hell for that company. Virus attacks can cripple office systems very quickly resulting in lost revenue and consumer confidence which can affect the way that stocks in that company are traded resulting in even further financial losses. That is why it is so important for larger businesses to have comprehensive computer virus protection programs in place.

These virus programs are much more detailed and powerful than the anti-virus programs that many consumers have protecting their computer systems. Because the fallout from a virus attack is much more financially damaging to a large corporation, the virus protection program needs to be much more robust and capable of protecting multiple systems within the corporation. Computer viruses are a hot topic among businesses simply because of the way that they can affect the company financially.

Why are faced with problems of recording up

One of the common problems faced by a user log you in. This problem can occur if there is an error to the user. The most common error by a user that can cause this problem is described below:

Authentication data entry errors

Typo is the most common mistakes all users. Even if you miss or add a single letter symbol can register for failure. The system keeps track of your personal data if incorrect e-mail or password, it will not recognize

Look up login details

If you cannot connect on Facebook, maybe a reason, you are forgetting your password details. If you do not have this vital information, you cannot log in to you in any way. However, you can try to beat on the link, provided that said, “I can not access my account” Forgot Password “. With some of the personal data that you completed when you created your account, you can easily access your account now. In many cases, your login information via e-mail account are sent.
